ABOUT THE ARTIST
ADER (René Alemawo) is a self-taught painter and sculptor from Togo in West Africa. For the last ten years he has lived and worked on the Island of Gorée in Senegal, where he manages a gallery and workshop.
Ader creates a wide variety of sculptures in different types of wood, local and exotic (ebony, teak, acacia, oak, etc.) – and from miniature to monumental in size! He uses traditional tools, patiently allowing the wood to 'speak' to him as he carves, revealing its true form and its hidden message. Many of his works are abstract, depicting values such as freedom, happiness and harmony, while others are more traditional – and some humorous.
He has also developed a unique style and technique in his painting, using natural materials and dyes, specialising in collages made from recycled materials and common objects that can be found on the beach, in the home etc.
He facilitates creative art workshops for children and adolescents, both in Senegal as well as in Europe, and has been invited to work with children and educators in other countries in Africa, such as Togo, Ghana and Cameroun.
